AllWriters’ Retreat

ALLWRITERS’ ANNUAL WRITING RETREAT AT TECHNY TOWERS!

Come for four days of intense writing immersion at the 12th Annual AllWriters’ Retreat! Our retreat is located in the Maria House at the beautiful and peaceful Techny Towers Conference & Retreat Center in Techny, Illinois (www.technytowers.org). Our focus for the weekend is writing, writing, writing. The place is ours from Thursday at 3:00 p.m. through Sunday at 2:00 p.m.. You will have the entire four-day weekend, to write, talk with other writers, and write, and write…and write.

The event officially kicks off on Thursday evening at seven o’clock with a lecture. Typically, it’s given by AllWriters’ director, Kathie Giorgio. But in 2017, our twelfth year, we are doing something special!

Coming in from DeKalb, Illinois is fabulous author GK Wuori. Kathie met GK through sheer happenstance – she bought his collection of short stories, Nude In Tub, from the used bookstore at Milwaukee’s General Mitchell Airport. She was heading to Maine…GK wrote about Maine. She fell in love with the stories, looked for GK and found him living in Illinois. Much later, he told her that his fictional Maine town in his stories was based on the town she was going to for a retreat. GK writes quirky, Kathie writes quirky, their relationship is quirky, and now Kathie is bringing the quirky GK to the retreat for an unforgettable night.

GK Wuori is a Pushcart Prize winner who didn’t know he won, an Illinois Arts Council Fellow (he knew about that one), and widely-published short-story writer and novelist. He is the author of the cult-classic story collection, Nude In Tub, and Foreword Magazine’s Book of the Year in fiction, An American Outrage. He has also published the novellas, Now That I’m Ready To Tell You Everything and Infidelity, and the novel, HoneyLee’s Girl. More information on his work can be found at www.gkwuori.com.

The topic of GK’s lecture is A Wicked Good Odyssey: That Writer’s Life.

On Friday and Saturday nights, writers will form into a large workshop. Pages will be turned in three weeks in advance (due 5/29) of the retreat, so everyone will come to the table prepared. Participants will each receive a half-hour of workshop critique and discussion. Then, on Sunday morning, writers will gather again to complete the workshop so that every participant has a chance to have their work discussed. The event will end with an energizing creativity exercise that will keep your enthusiasm going after you get home. All participants will also receive a one-on-one consultation with Kathie.

Techny Towers is 30 minutes away from O’Hare. There is no need to rent a car. We will come to pick you up. The Amtrak station is close by as well.

Breakfast will be provided on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. For lunch, we will be bringing in a variety of sandwich fixings so that you can create your own sandwich based on your own dietary choices. For dinner on Thursday, you will be on your own, but plenty of us will be heading out to find sustenance. There are grocery stores and a variety of restaurants close by. On Friday, we will be serving two homemade chilies, one with meat and one vegan, along with a fresh salad and bread, and on Saturday, we will sit down together to a wonderful dinner in the main building at Techny Towers.

While Techny Towers provides everything, you may want to bring a few comforts from home…towels, snacks, and whatever it is you use to write. This is a wonderful place to be…the grounds are beautiful, the area is peaceful, and sure to inspire.

Everyone will have their own bedroom, complete with bed, dresser, desk, and sink. Showers are dorm-style. We have room for 20 writers! Come on out!

The retreat will be held in 2017 from Thursday, June 22 through Sunday, June 25. The cost is $425.
